Fun Getaways for 2020!

If travel is part of your New Year’s resolution for 2020, here are some fun getaway ideas that may be a bit off the beaten path, yet well worth a visit! The five places listed below are easy to get to and offer lots of great activities for both families and couples looking for a romantic escape. I’ve picked some destinations that can be visited in 4 days or less, are affordable to visit, and are all within less than a 4-hour plane ride from Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

Charleston, SC-

Wow, what a charming Southern city!  This fun and cultural destination is located right on the Atlantic. It showcases its spectacular architecture with its antebellum homes and offers an array of activities. You can enjoy horse-drawn carriages and scenic bike rides all in one day. The city is oozing history, where you can visit sites important to the civil war. Check out its amazing restaurants where you can sample some of the South’s most delectable dishes. Getting there and around: Fly to Charleston and there’s no need to rent a car if you will stay in the downtown area.

Fort Worth, TX-

This city is Texas! It shares an airport with Dallas, yet still preserves its cowboy traditions and small-town feel. You can pay a visit to the Stockyards where you can experience the daily herding of the cattle. On weekends you can attend an authentic rodeo, too. Make sure to arrive early to sample delicious Texas steaks at one of their award-winning steakhouses . Or you can shop for local souvenirs such as cowboy boots and hats. Other worth-while attractions include the Kimbell Art Museum, the Fort Worth Zoo, and the Fort Worth Water Gardens. Getting there and around: Fly into Dallas Fort Worth Airport and rent a car to easily get around, but make sure your accommodations provide parking.

Charlottesville, VA-

This charming town was home to Thomas Jefferson and now home to the University of Virginia. There are great wineries in the area as well as beautiful hiking trails where you can surround yourself with nature. The historic downtown area also has great little boutiques and excellent restaurants. Monticello, or Thomas Jefferson’s home, is a must-see attraction, but also take time to stroll through the campus, also founded by Jefferson himself. Getting there and around: You can fly into Charlottesville or Richmond or even Washington Dulles and rent a car to be able to visit surrounding areas.

Branson, MO

What a great town in the land of the Ozarks. This welcoming town is famous for its musical shows and concerts. Try the local barbeque and immerse yourself in the wide range of activities. There are great family attractions like the Silver Dollar City amusement park, the Titanic Music, and fun outdoor activities both on the lakes and in the forests. There are lots of vacation rentals in the area that offer accommodations for the entire family. Getting there and around: Fly into the Springfield/Branson Airport and rent a car to drive to Branson and to get around the area.

Providence, RI-

Though sometimes overshadowed by its bigger neighboring city of Boston, within less than an hour’s drive, Providence is a must-see city.   Home to one of the most prestigious universities in the US (Brown University), this city is full of little surprises and quaint neighborhoods. While there you can really enjoy the city by walking along its Riverwalk. Make sure to visit during one of its WaterFire events for added entertainment along the river. Great little day trips include visiting the historic waterfront town of Bristol, the relaxing and scenic Block Island, accessible by ferry, and Newport, the sailing capital of the world. Getting there and around: Fly into Providence or Boston and rent a car to be able to visit nearby areas, but make sure your hotel offers parking.  If you stay in the downtown area, a car may not be needed.

When to go!

If you want to take advantage of low airfares to visit some of these cities, many online sites (such as kayak) will allow you to set an alert when fares go down. Also check for any fun festivals that may be taking place in some of these destinations as sometimes hotel rates may go up. Consider staying at an AirBnB or just outside the city for better rates. May your 2020 be filled with great trips full of fun memories with your loved ones. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
